The Number 1 Muscle Eater
Today, rather than discussing how to gain muscle mass, I'd like to talk about the number one thing that sends us into a catabolic state, which in turn eats away our hard-earned muscle. And that dreadful thing is: our ego! While that might not be the answer you expected, learning to deal with your ego is one of the most important muscle gaining secrets out there.
Ego can be a huge problem with us guys. We're always out to outdo the next guy, to be superior. I struggled with this for years and years before I finally accepted the truth that it was detrimental towards my goal of gaining muscle mass.
I used to go to the gym and watch all of these 200 pound plus guys lifting a small amount. Then I'd strut up to perform the same exercise and lift MORE than that mountain of muscle was lifting. Little did I know, I was only harming any growth potential that I had because I was training my muscles for strength, not for size. My ego was preventing me from performing true muscle building workouts.
The minute I got it through my head that heavier weight didn't mean bigger muscles I started to make gains like never before. Simply because I was training my muscles for size instead of power, which involved using a lighter weight with better form, extended time of lowering the weight, and rep ranges 8-10.
Once I had this concept engraved into my mind, I gained 21 pounds of lean body mass in 9 weeks. If there is one point to walk away from this email it is this...
MORE WEIGHT DOESN'T MEAN MORE MUSCLE!
Have you ever watched a strong man competition? The strongest/ most powerful men in the world are not bodybuilders by any means, they have the body of a bear. They do not look muscular, and really, they're not that big compared to 400 pound plus bodybuilders out there.
Keep this in mind when you are training. If you have to lower the weight to get full range motion with perfect form, do not rob yourself of MASSSIVE gains simply because it might bruise your ego in lowering the weight...
Until we speak again, hit the gym hard, make your gains, throw the ego out the window.
